Fire damages abandoned building on Maui

Advertiser Staff

An abandoned building fire today in Paia, Maui, closed a section of Baldwin Avenue between Puakou Place and the Paia Mill to traffic for nearly two hours.

Three trailers containing tour company bicycles were damaged in the 9:42 a.m. fire which burned a building measuring 50 feet by 40 feet. Damage was estimated at $60,000.

"Quick response by Paia Fire Station personnel kept the fire from reaching nearby buildings including a retail store that was approximately 10 feet away," said acting Battalion Chief Allen Duarte.

No injuries were reported. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
