The Center for Citizen Leadership has awarded its first James E. Suh Fellowship to Sergeant Tim Smith of St. Louis, Mo.

The Suh Fellowship is given in memory of the Peal Harbor-based Navy SEAL who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2005.

Suh was killed, along with 18 other service members in action June 28, 2005 during a rescue operation in Afghanistan.

At the time of his deployment, Suh was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE, Pearl Harbor. Suh received the Bronze Star with Valor and Purple Heart posthumously for his actions.

Smith served in the Army from June 2003 to February 2007 and is currently a member of the Army Reserves.

He deployed with a field artillery unit to Iraq in 2004.

Upon returning to the United States, Smith was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a severe chronic eye condition.

As a James E. Suh fellow, Smith will volunteer at the Department of Veterans Affairs as a peer counselor for veterans returning from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the global war on terror.
