LONDON — Carlos Moya of Spain and Argentines Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco are among the first players to withdraw from Wimbledon due to injuries.
The All England Club announced today that the 31-year-old Moya, who was ranked No. 1 in March 1999 but has slipped to No. 40 with recurring injuries, has an injured shoulder.
Moya, the 1998 French Open champion, has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon but has only played in the grass-court championship twice in the previous six years. Of his 20 career titles, 16 are on clay and four on hard courts.
Chela also has a shoulder problem and Monaco withdrew with an injured back.
Argentines Martin Vassallo Arguello and Brian Dabul and Croatia's Roko Karanusic come into the main draw as replacements.
Japan's Akiko Morigami withdrew from the women's singles draw with an injured knee and was replaced by Czech player Renato Voracova.
