Kauai golfer Watabu qualifies for U.S. Amateur Public Links

Kellen Watabu advanced to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship next month in Colorado by winning a qualifier yesterday with a 149 at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.

Watabu, of Kapa'a, shot a 75 in the morning round and a 74 in the afternoon round to win by one stroke.

Lihu'e's Jonathan Ota was second and Jon Burkard of Alameda, Calif., finished third at 152.

Kellen Watabu is the younger brother of Casey Watabu, who won the Publinx Championship in 2006.

Sectional qualifiers will be held on O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island later this month.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship will be July 14 to 19 at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
