Police yesterday were seeking a man with black, spiky hair driving a new light-colored sport utility vehicle who fled the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident Wednesday night in Iwilei.

The SUV had temporary paper license plates, said police Sgt. John Agno.

Agno said the SUV was traveling west in the center lane on Dillingham Boulevard when it struck a 79-year-old Honolulu man crossing the street from the mauka to the makai side about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, Agno said.

The SUV driver stopped briefly before speeding off, witnesses told police.

A 2001 Dodge Neon, driven by a 28-year-old woman, then ran over the fallen pedestrian and dragged him about 30 feet. The Neon was in the right lane next to the SUV, Agno said.

The injured man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he died at 12:51 a.m. yesterday.

The victim's name was being withheld until his identity is confirmed.

The death was O'ahu's 18th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 35 at this time last year.
