Rail transit project workshop June 12

The city will host a workshop for potential suppliers of a planned rail transit project from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 12 at the Neal Blaisdell Center. The workshop will outline the project schedule and opportunities for designers, contractors and subcontractors.
Workshop topics include project overview, project implementation schedule, potential civil contract packaging and procurement process, contract components and construction features, and additional Honolulu project opportunities.

PALOLO CENTER GETS $35,000 GRANT
Mutual Assistance Associations Center in Palolo Valley has received a $35,000 Community Based Economic Development grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to provide computer training and "life skills" for youth and adults.
Through its Community Technology Center in the Palolo District Park Gymnasium, MAAC teaches children, teenagers and young adults from Palolo Valley public schools the basics of computer usage. In addition, evening vocational classes and job search services are provided for adults.
"We are very pleased to receive this award from OHA," said Milton Hutchison, executive director.
"The grant will be used to pay for staffing for MAAC's Community Technology Center. We are deeply grateful to OHA for their support and we look forward to working with them on more projects for the benefit of Native Hawaiians," he said.

BUILDERS RECEIVE $100,000 BOOST
The First Hawaiian Bank Foundation has given a $100,000 grant to support the Building Industry Association of Hawaii's capital campaign for its new $7.75 million Construction Training Center of the Pacific.
The contribution places The First Hawaiian Bank Foundation and First Hawaiian Bank in The Benefactor Circle, the highest level of donor giving. The donation enabled the capital campaign to reach the $6 million mark.
The Construction Training Center of the Pacific, established by the Hawaii Building Industry Foundation, provides pre-apprenticeship and continuing education for the construction industry.
The new 17,000-square-foot Construction Training Center of the Pacific will be in Waipahu. Chartered in 1955, the BIA of Hawaii is a professional trade organization affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
ARCHITECTS HAWAII JOINS INITIATIVE
Architects Hawaii Ltd. has joined the national Public Architecture program under which it will pledge a minimum of 1 percent of its billable hours to pro bono service.
Architects Hawaii has already offered its services to the Salvation Army for its Family Treatment Services Facility in Manoa. AHL has 50 staff members participating in the program and said it plans to donate 1,000 hours annually.
In addition to its involvement, AHL persuaded numerous vendors to provide pro bono services or make donations to the Salvation Army project.
The 1 percent program was launched by Public Architecture in 2005 with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. A total of 300 architecture firms across the nation have pledged their design services to the initiative.
