"Hula Moon at Mauna Lani," a new show focusing on the charms of pre-statehood Hawai'i, will debut Friday night at The Shops at Mauna Lani on the Big Island.

The free performance, staged at 7 and 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays on the center stage of the shopping and dining destination, is produced by Traditions Hawai'i, the dance troupe led by kumu hula Nani Lim of Kohala.

The show features nostalgic hapa-haole songs and hula — with young women dancers clad in cellophane hula skirts — recreating the mode and music of the Islands, circa 1920s to 1950s, when Hawai'i was a territory and a destination for cruise ships, when Hollywood beckoned and brought the aura of a romantic paradise to the world.

Kumu Lim and her son, Carrington Lim, are collaborators in writing and choreographing the mini-production. They alsoare the creative forces of "Kamehameha: Shark Eyes and Restless Nights," another show at The Shops at Mauna Lani, at 7 and 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.
