Over 35,000 gallons of wastewater was discharged yesterday into the channel under the Sand Island bridge adjacent to the Marine Education & Training Center, U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, reported today in a news release.
The discharge from a force main under the bridge occurred at 4:20 p.m. and the cause is under investigation.
The Army's Directorate of Public Works shut down the force main and diverted the pipe's main flow of wastewater. DPW is coordinating monitoring efforts with the state's Clean Water Branch.
The public is advised to stay out of waters fronting the Marine Education & Training Center, the University of Hawai'i Marine Center, Snug Harbor, Kapalama Basin, Mokauea Island, and the Kalihi Channel of Ke'ehi Lagoon.
