A public information meeting will be held tomorrow on a proposed beach restoration project at Stable Road in Spreckelsville, an area subject to extreme erosion from seasonal sand movement.

The meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is reviewing an application filed by the Stable Road Beach Restoration Foundation for a small-scale beach nourishment permit. Also required for the project is a biological monitoring plan, sand-source approval and water quality certification from the Department of Health's Clean Water Branch.

If approved, the project is expected to start next summer.

The foundation seeks to restore the sandy beach approximately 30 to 40 feet inland to a former position, according to the DLNR. Use of "geotube" sand bags will retain as much of the placed sand as possible.

Clean marine sand from offshore will be used for the project, not the inland sand used in previous beach restoration efforts in Spreckelsville that contained higher concentrations of silt and dirt, the DLNR said.

Before the project starts, the DLNR plans to talk with fishermen and others who use the area.

The state Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands developed a marine survey report on the proposal with the assistance of the National Marine Fisheries Service. The federal agency did not express significant concerns about the project, but did suggest the foundation conduct additional and ongoing nearshore surveys to assess any changes to the marine ecosystem caused by the project.
