Visitor arrivals and spending posted double-digit declines in June as the downturn in the state's tourism industry deepened.
The number of visitors to the islands fell to 580,862 in June, a 14.2 percent drop from the same month a year earlier, according to a report released today by the state Department of Business, Economic and Development and Tourism. Spending by visitors arriving by air fell 13.5 percent to $982.4 million during the same period.
"June's visitor statistics reflect the loss of two Norwegian Cruse Line ships, increased fuel costs and a continued soft travel market, especially from the U.S. Mainland," said Marsha Wienert, the state's tourism liaison.
