Soccer: Red Bulls' Echeverry to have knee surgery

Associated Press

SECAUCUS, N.J. — New York Red Bulls forward Oscar Echeverry will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee.

Echeverry had been playing banged up and a scan of his right knee last week revealed a bone lesion. The Colombian is scheduled to have the surgery Aug. 7 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the team said today. He will be out for six months.

The Red Bulls placed him on the league's season-ending injury list.

Echeverry signed with the team on March 26. He started seven of nine games.

Echeverry, who previously played for Colombian First Division side Atletico Nacional, scored a goal in the Red Bulls' 1-0 exhibition win over Chivas de Guadalajara on June 25 in Glendale, Ariz.

In another move, the team signed Mexican defender Diego Jimenez to a developmental contract. The 22-year-old spent the previous three seasons with Tecos.

"Diego will provide depth and experience to our defense and we're confident that he will compete for a starting position," Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said.
