Tennis: Sugiyama, Kirilenko advance at Rogers Cup

MONTREAL — Ai Sugiyama of Japan downed 16th-seeded Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 today in an opening-round match at the Rogers Cup.
The 33-year-old Sugiyama dropped the first three games of the first set, then won eight straight against the 19-year-old Vaidisova.
In other matches, 13th-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia beat Anne Keothavong of Britain 6-1, 7-5; 11th-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus ousted Jamea Jackson of the U.S. 6-1, 6-1; and Alisa Kleybanova of Russia topped Ahsha Rolle of the U.S. 6-4, 6-2.
