How Hawai'i Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono and Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye voted in key legislation last week.

    KEY HOUSE VOTES

    1. FORECLOSURE PREVENTION ACT

The House approved 272-152 Wednesday a bill aimed at helping homeowners avoid foreclosure and shoring up lending giants Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The White House, after threatening a veto, dropped its objections, paving the way for passage. The Senate cleared the plan yesterday.

    2. CONSUMER ENERGY SUPPLY ACT

By a vote of 268-157, the House failed Thursday to gain the two-thirds majority required to pass a bill that would have released 70 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an attempt to provide short-term relief at the gas pump. By requiring a two-thirds majority vote instead of a straight majority vote, House Democrats kept Republicans from forcing a vote on amendments to allow offshore drilling.

    3. NATIONAL HIGHWAY BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION AND INSPECTION ACT

The House voted 367-55 Thursday to pass legislation that would provide funding to repair and maintain the nation's decaying bridges. The $1 billion measure was introduced after the Interstate 35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis last year. The White House is opposed to the additional $1 billion.

The House voted 303-115 Thursday to authorize $48 billion over five years for combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases abroad. The bill also would repeal a ban on HIV-positive visitors to the U.S. The president is expected to sign it.
