TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Mad Men" season opener, 7 p.m. AMC. "Mad Men," a show that didn't even break into the top-100 list in viewers, has 16 Emmy nominations. Is it really that good? The answer tonight is both yes and no. Yes, "Mad Men" has a splendid sense of time, place and character. Under the cool, male-dominated exterior of an ad agency, souls are quaking. What it doesn't always give us is a story. This hour is set on Valentine's Day, 1962. Don Draper, the agency's creative director, plans the perfect night with his perfect wife. Others settle for buying chocolates. Meanwhile, secretaries are wary of this new-fangled copy machine. Next week's hour adds a big story; this one mostly re-establishes the players.
OF NOTE
"Masterpiece: Foyle's War" 9 p.m., PBS. Here's the final chapter of "Foyle's War," the sturdy series about a quiet cop (Michael Kitchen) in small-town England during World War II. Tonight, Germany is about to surrender. Still, shattered souls are everywhere.
"High School Musical: Get in the Picture," 7 p.m., ABC. Last week had the East Coast auditions; tonight and Monday, the West Coast has its turn.
"The Wizard of Oz" (1939), 5 and 7:15 p.m., TNT. Here are two chances to see a family classic.
"Cold Case" and "Flashpoint," 8 and 9 p.m., CBS. In a change of plans, CBS puts these reruns back to back. The first re-opens the 1919 murder of a suffragette; the second has a former drug addict get in the way of a major bust.
"Mythbusters: Shark Special," 9 p.m., Discovery Channel. The annual "Shark Week" begins. At 8 p.m. is the rerun of a "Mythbusters" strictly devoted to "Jaws," then comes this new round. Are sharks attracted to dogs? Are they repelled by magnets or chili powder? We'll see.
"Generation Kill," 6, 9:10 p.m., HBO. After introducing us to the Marines in two fairly good episodes, this miniseries suddenly gets much better. Facing some tough ethical crises, the soldiers confront their superiors. This is the richest kind of moral dilemma, one in which you can deeply empathize with people, even when someone has made a horrible mistake.
"Desperate Housewives," 9 p.m., ABC. Here's a rerun of the post-tornado episode. With Mrs. McCluskey's house leveled, we learn what happened to the people inside — Ida Greenberg and Lynette's family.
"Army Wives," 7 and 10 p.m., Lifetime. Last week's hour (rerunning at 6 and 9 p.m.) saw Roxy re-open the bombed bar. Tonight, she hires a waitress. Also, the guys in Delta Force are arrested.
