Two Waikiki purse-snatchers arrested

Two suspected street thieves are facing charges for allegedly trying to steal purses from women in separate incidents yesterday in Waikiki.

A 22-year-old Lai'e man is being held on two minor warrants while under investigation for second-degree theft. Bystanders chased down the suspect and detained him for police fronting 2490 Kalakaua Ave. at 2:40 a.m.

Witnesses told police the man allegedly snatched the purse of a 41-year-old woman waiting at a busstop.

In a separate incident, second-degree robbery charges are pending against a 52-year-old man who allegedly grabbed a 54-year-old woman's shoulder bag in at 3:15 p.m., dragged the victim several feet before releasing the bag and fleeing. Police located the suspect fronting 100 Holomoana St. and arrested him after the victim and a witness identified him.
