Advertiser Staff

A 60-year-old California man was pronounced dead after being pulled from the ocean off Po'ipu, Kaua'i, yesterday.

The man, a resident of San Jose, Calif., was found unresponsive at 4:46 p.m., about 50 yards from the shoreline fronting the Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club in Po'ipu, officials said.

Surfers in the area brought the man to shore. Lifeguards performed CPR until firefighters and medics arrived and took over CPR.

The man was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

1,300 GALLONS OF WASTEWATER SPILLS

Maui County officials reported that a wastewater spill of about 1,300 gallons occurred yesterday at 9:50 a.m. and was stopped shortly thereafter.

The 20-inch forcemain break occurred near the intersection of Amala Place and Hobron Avenue in Kahului.

The spill was caused when a contractor working in the area punctured the forcemain. The spill was immediately contained by a dirt berm constructed by the contractor.

Standing water was removed and the area was disinfected. Wastewater did not reach the ocean, and the state Department of Health was notified, the county said.

The park maintains three cabins in the crater: Holua along the Halemau'u Trail, Kapalaoa along the south wall, and Paliku on the east end of the crater.
