KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After a slow start, Miguel Cabrera is hitting like the Detroit Tigers thought he would when they acquired him an off-season trade.

Cabrera matched his career high with five hits and six RBIs and Matt Joyce added four hits and five RBIs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals, 19-4, last night.

It was the third time this season that the Tigers scored 19 runs. The Boston Red Sox were the last team to accomplish that feat, scoring 19 or more four times in 1950 according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Detroit beat Texas 19-6 on April 23 and Minnesota 19-3 on May 24.

"Cabrera had a huge night as did a bunch of other guys," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "When his concentration is locked in, he's pretty impressive."

Joyce hit a three-run homer in the third and had two singles in the Tigers' 10-run eighth inning, which also included a Gary Sheffield three-run homer. Cabrera singled and doubled and drove in two runs in the eighth when the Tigers sent 15 batters to the plate.

Orioles 8, Blue Jays 3: Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the third inning, Melvin Mora had a two-run single in a three-run fifth, and Ramon Hernandez added a two-run shot in the eighth that carried host Baltimore past Toronto.

Red Sox 4, Mariners 0: Jon Lester (8-3) carried an eight-hit shutout into the eighth inning, before leaving after getting hit on the shin by a ground ball, and Jason Varitek hit a two-run homer as Boston beat Seattle for its major league-best 11th shutout of the season.

Yankees 12, Twins 4: Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer and an RBI single, Robinson Cano hit an upper-deck drive and Derek Jeter also went deep as New York won its eighth straight at home.

Rangers 6, White Sox 1: Josh Hamilton hit a three-run homer and Hank Blalock added a two-run shot as Texas handed Chicago its third straight loss, all at home.

Indians 5, Angels 2: Andy Marte, Casey Blake and Jhonny Peralta hit home runs and visiting Cleveland beat Los Angeles, snapping the AL West leaders' five-game winning streak.
