FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — A sheriff's deputy in northwest Florida is dead after authorities say he was shot by a man who had barricaded himself in a house.
Okaloosa County Sheriff's officials said deputies returned fire and killed the man.
The Northwest Florida Daily News says a second deputy was injured during this morning's shooting.
The sheriff's office said deputies had taken the man to a local hospital for a mental examination twice Monday. Early today, the man barricaded himself in a house with a shotgun.
A negotiation team tried to talk him out at 6 a.m. and the shooting happened shortly afterward.
Officials did not immediately release the names of the deputy or the man in the house. A news conference was scheduled later today.
