City's grocery-coupon use low

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu stands near the bottom of a ranking of coupon-clipping U.S. cities, with only 21 percent of households using grocery coupons once a week or more, according to a recent analysis.

The national average was 27 percent.

Consumer and media measurement firm Scarborough Research examined nearly 80 cities and found that Milwaukee and Rochester, N.Y., households lead the U.S. in coupon use with 40 percent and 38 percent, respectively.

Cities with people more likely to clip coupons have higher than average Sunday newspaper readership rates, the analysis said. Those who read the Sunday newspaper are 15 percent more likely than all adults to use coupons.

Across the nation, grocery coupon-clipping households shop at various types of stores, including mass grocers like SuperTarget and warehouse clubs like Sam's Club, the analysis said. They are average for shopping at Wal-Mart Supercenters, which is the store with the highest percentage of grocery shoppers nationally.

The analysis said households that clip grocery coupons tend to spend a little more money on groceries weekly — $114 compared to $110. They are also more likely to have children at home and higher household incomes.
