FALLEN TREE BLOCKS ROAD TO LANIKAI

A fallen tree last night caused power lines to come down on Kawailoa Road, cutting off the only way into Lanikai, police said.

About 1,000 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers were without power late last night, HECO spokesman Darren Pai said.

HECO called a contractor to remove the tree so HECO crews could repair the lines, Pai said. He estimated at 10 p.m. that it might take several hours for power to be restored.

A witness said that initially cars coming out of Lanikai were getting out by making an impromptu detour through Kailua Beach Park, but that a police officer later stopped that maneuver as hazardous.

Kawailoa Road was closed was from Alala Street to South Kalaheo Avenue.
