Fundraiser for Olympian Takata Sunday at 'Iolani

Olympian Taylor Takata will hold a fundraiser dinner Sunday, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the 'Iolani School student center.

Takata, a 2000 graduate of 'Iolani, will represent the U.S. in the men's 145.5-pound judo division in Beijing. He is just the fourth judoka from Hawai'i to qualify for the Olympics.

The program will feature a video presentation of Takata's matches at the June U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Las Vegas.

Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 students (18-under) and free for children 6 and under. They are available for purchase at the 'Iolani School Institutional Advancement Office. For more information, call 943-2253 or e-mail iao@iolani.org.

GREEN BUFFALO LEADS

Green Buffalo, skippered by Mary Lovely, had the early lead yesterday in the 15th biennial Pacific Cup yacht race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.

The last of the 38 yachts are scheduled to leave the starting line under the Golden Gate Bridge today.

The first boat is expected to arrive around Aug. 1.

LOW HELD SCORELESS

'Iolani alum Derrick Low missed both of his field-goal attempts and made one steal in 7 minutes, 18 seconds of playing time yesterday as his Dallas Mavericks beat the Sacramento Kings, 93-71, in an NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas.


TRIATHLON

TINMAN SEEKS HELP

The Hawai'i Tinman Triathlon is seeking volunteers for the race on Sunday.

Volunteers are needed to mark swimmers and for setup and breakdown.

Swim volunteers should call the Bike Shop at 596-0588. Other volunteers should contact Joan Davis at 955-0902 or e-mail divavpr4@hotmail.com.

The 750-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10K run starts at 5:30 a.m. and ends in the Kapi'olani Park area.


BASEBALL

ELDREDGE CLINIC AUG. 2

The fifth Eldredge Athletics Baseball Clinic is set for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Punahou School baseball field.

Registration is open to the first 80 players ages 9 to 15. Cost is $65, which includes a T-shirt and lunch. Registration forms can be downloaded from www.eballclinics.com. Deadline to register is Monday.
