The initial shipment of Apple Inc.'s iPhone sold out within three days of its introduction at Apples stores in Hawai'i, with the two locations now replenishing stock and advising customers to check back daily.

National reports indicate that the latest phones sold out in 21 states, including Hawai'i, on Monday. The company has announced that it sold 1 million of the phones worldwide by Sunday afternoon.

At midday yesterday, the Ala Moana Apple store indicated that the 16GB black model was out but the others were in stock.

The Kahala store said it was out of all of the phones.

But employees at both stores said they get new shipments every weekday. They aren't aware of how many of the new phones are coming in until they open the boxes.

Some 1,800 AT&T stores are selling the phones but it's not clear how many are available in Hawai'i. Yesterday, calls to several Honolulu stores failed to find a live person answering the phone.

The AT&T recording indicated that "extraordinary demand" for the new iPhone has caused extended wait times.

Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said in a news release: "It took 74 days to sell the first 1 million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."

The new iPhone 3G is priced at $199 for the 8GB black model, and $299 for the 16GB model in black and white.

Employees also suggest that customers call each store or check the Web site after 9 p.m.: www.apple.com/retail.

Early yesterday, it said Hawai'i stores were out, then it updated to suggest calling the store.
