Pregnancy brings change, and some of it brings joy
Between unpredictable hormones, varicose veins and an aching back from carrying around the equivalent of a 30-pound sack of rice, pregnancy can be a challenge. Even tougher are the potential gestation-related medical conditions that can necessitate early delivery, bed rest or the like.
For most normal pregnancies, however, there are actually several benefits for the mother-to-be:
Such thoughtfulness is definitely welcome. Unless (or even if) she was formerly a professional athlete, the third-trimester bodily stress can be such that traversing a block causes breathlessness.
No one questions the need for rest; naps and sleeping in are actually encouraged. Walking becomes an acceptable substitute for more strenuous forms of exercise. At the gym there is a clear change from "C'mon, one more!" to "Take it easy."
Maternity stores seem to have caught on to fashion trends, and those who are hapai can actually purchase fairly stylish attire for work, home or outings.
Although healthy foods should be the mainstay of any dietary plan, there is always room for a little ice cream (uh, isn't it a source of calcium?) and it is a relief not to have to monitor cholesterol intake. Bring on the cheese and eggs.
There are few things more awe-inspiring than the creation of life. Every flutter, every kick, is an amazing sign of a new existence.
Expectant moms absently rub their bellies, joyfully anticipating their 'ohana's new addition, and the precious moment when they will first meet their baby face to face.
The downsides, and even the other benefits, of pregnancy fade away in comparison to the marvelous wonder of the growing life inside.
Truly, celebrating a miracle is the best part of being hapai.
