A man believed to be in his mid-50s was fatally injured last night after being struck by a station wagon or van while crossing Kamehameha Highway in Kane'ohe.

The accident in the area of Kaneohe Market at 45-1100 Kamehameha Highway forced the closure of the roadway to traffic.

Police said the man was crossing the highway from west to east in a marked crosswalk about 9:50 p.m. when he was hit by a north-bound 1997 Dodge driven by a 46-year-old man.

The driver stopped after hitting the pedestrian, police said.

The injured man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead about 11 p.m.

Police said the accident happened in a lighted area under clear and dry road conditions. They said alcohol was not a factor in the case but that speeding was a "probable" contributing cause.

The death is O'ahu's 26th traffic fatality of 2008 and 13th since May 15. It is also the island's ninth pedestrian fatality and second since Saturday.
