Honolulu police suspect today's early morning drive-by shooting on Moanalua Freeway may be connected to another shooting incident June 29 and involves two rival factions, possibly from Kalihi and Halawa.
Today's shooting, in which a 16-year-old boy was shot in the left shoulder, occurred on Moanalua Freeway and was reported at 1:54 a.m.
The boy was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.
Police said the boy was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle driven by a man, 22. They were headed west on Moanalua Freeway when four shots were fired at them from another vehicle.
According to the victims, the shooter was masked.
Investigators believe today's incident is connected to a shooting June 29 on North Nimitz Highway in which shots were fired at a pickup truck at 1:40 a.m. by suspects in three vehicles. A man, 23, and nine passengers — girls between the ages of 14 and 18 — escaped injury. The shooting occurred between Sand Island and Hickam Air Force Base, police said.
Today's shooting is classified as an attempted murder while the June 29 incident is being investigated as first-degree reckless endangering. In the June 29 case, police said the suspects were two males, ages 17 and 18.
A third drive-by shooting on June 5 on Moanalua Freeway does not appear to be connected to the other two incidents. Shots were fired at two men, ages 19 and 18, at 4:30 a.m. on the freeway. Police suspect the shooting was tied to an earlier verbal argument.
