Hilo man was pedestrian fatality

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office yesterday identified the pedestrian who died yesterday after being critically injured Friday night in Kailua as Brandon Anderson, 27, of Hilo.
An autopsy is scheduled for today. Anderson died at 10:25 p.m. Saturday at The Queen's Medical Center.
Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. John Agno said the pedestrian was struck by a Ford van, driven by an 87-year-old Kane'ohe man, at 9:09 p.m. in the intersection of Kailua Road and Ulu'oa Street.
The pedestrian, in a marked crosswalk, suffered injuries to his head and torso, Agno said. The motorist was not injured.
The traffic-related fatality is O'ahu's 25th this year.
KAILUA, KONA MAN KILLED IN CRASH
A 41-year-old Kailua, Kona man was killed yesterday in a motorcycle crash on Hawai'i Belt Road, also known as Route 11, in the Ka'u District of the Big Island.
The crash occurred at 3:22 p.m. three-tenths of a mile north of the 49-mile marker near Pahala.
Hawai'i County Traffic Enforcement supervisor Sgt. Christopher Gali said the man was operating a 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle headed south on the highway when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road. The victim, who died at the scene, was officially pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 8:17 p.m., Gali said.
Police did not release the man's name pending notification of next of kin. The crash marks the Big Island's 14th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 17 by the same date in 2007.
37 CHARGED WITH DRUNKEN DRIVING
Six repeat offenders and eight others under the legal drinking age of 21 were among 37 people charged with drunken driving over a 36-hour period from late Friday night through yesterday morning in Honolulu.
Charged as repeat offenders with $1,000 bail each were Patrick Charles Areal, 24; Daniel G. Andersen, 26; Dolten K. Dela Pena, 23; Joseph K. Kim, 55; Clarence Keawe Brown, 50, and Gary Viernes Respicio, 26.
In addition to the operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant charge, Andersen was charged with driving while his license is suspended for a previous DUI offense and also for an outstanding $250 warrant, while Dela Pena was charged with driving without a license.
Those under the legal drinking age charged with DUI were Megan Young, 19; Colson Lindberg Palani Ching, 18; Darryl K. Lee, 19; Ke-a Shawn Kaipo Caminos, 20; Tracey C. Ellazar, 20; Miricia Kiana Rapozo, 19; Justin C. Reyes, 20, and Andrew Aifaoto, 19. All are first-time offenders and bail for each is $500.
