OMAHA, Neb. — Katie Hoff has claimed a fifth individual race in Beijing by winning the 800-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.
Hoff pulled away from world champion Kate Ziegler midway through the race to win in 8 minutes 20.81 seconds. Ziegler gained a spot on the Olympic team by finishing second in 8:25.38. The oldest world swimming record stayed on the books — Janet Evans' 8:16.22 set in 1989.
Hoff qualified for as many individual events at the Olympics as her former North Baltimore Aquatic Club teammate, Michael Phelps.
