Although he has gone through drills before, Steve Bralver still felt the butterflies.

That's because he was hitting, fielding and throwing before a small but captive audience of big league scouts. How Bralver did at yesterday's Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League's scout day, plus how he will do his final season at Division III Emory University will determine if he gets a shot at pro baseball.

The league's position players were timed in the 60-yard dash, observed in how they fielded and threw, and evaluated in their hitting yesterday at Les Murakami Stadium. Representatives from the Major League Scouting Bureau will file a report on each participant and disseminate the information to all 30 big league clubs, said scout Dan Dixon of the bureau.

"Going into my senior year, I know I can still play the game," said Bralver, whose family moved here from California after he spent the 2005 season at the University of Hawai'i before transferring to Emory. "I've got to give it all I got. This is my only chance."

For 2004 'Aiea High graduate Kepa Wong, a first baseman at Lewis-Clark State, this was his first scout day.

"At first, I was a little nervous," said Wong, who is playing for the Waikiki Surfers in HCBL. "It's a good experience to show your talent."

Every summer, HCBL stages the event for the scouts. League president Al Kam said he tries to compact as many events for the scouts during their week in Hawai'i. The scouts will get to evaluate the league's better pitchers in tonight's HCBL all-star game at Murakami Stadium. Game time is 6:30. Pitchers weren't evaluated yesterday because of time constraints and it is better to watch them under game conditions.

Tomorrow, the scouts will move over to Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park for a high school showcase that is doubling as a tryout for the Hawai'i teams that play in the Arizona Fall Classic. Those trying out were nominated by their high school coaches, Kam said. They will do some drills similar to the college players in the morning. Some will be asked to stay for the afternoon's scrimmage.

"This is very well-organized," Dixon said of yesterday's scout day. "We get an opportunity to see kids throw, run, take batting practice. They've already picked the all-star teams. It makes it a real nice weekend for the scouts to be able to come over here and get a lot done in a few days."

Dixon said every player, regardless of skill level, gets graded in running, throwing and hitting. Reports are given to all clubs, who can reference the players their scouts might see in the coming season.

According to the HCBL Web site, 15 alumni of the summer league were taken in the MLBB First-Year Player Draft last month. Four former HCBL players were drafted in 2006 and in 2007.

"They don't have the top players in the country over here, but looking at the rosters, they're going after kids who are focused, highly recommended by their coaches," Dixon said. "It's a good place for them to come for the summer. As far as prospects, we'll find out (at tonight's all-star game)."

Dixon said he does about four or five events each year.

Besides the MLB scouting bureau, there were scouts from some of the big league teams.

The league has a wide range of talent. There are players from Division I, II and III, NAIA and junior colleges. There also are a handful of recent high school graduates trying to get acclimated to facing college players before they do so at school.

One such player is Kamuela Paniolos first baseman Michael Garza, who graduated from MacArthur High in San Antonio, Texas. He is headed for nationally ranked Stanford.

"I was just looking for a place to play," Garza said. "It gives me a good feel for the (college) game. It's a change of pace. That's why I wanted to get out here. I want to get a jump on the other (incoming) freshmen."
