PARIS (AP) _ Amelie Mauresmo withdrew from the Olympic tennis tournament Thursday because she was not chosen to compete in singles.

The former top-ranked Frenchwoman, who won the silver medal in singles at the 2004 Olympics, was only selected to compete in doubles in Beijing.

"Because I was not picked by the French federation to compete for a medal in singles, and because I need to maintain my fitness ... I have decided not to take part in the Beijing Games to concentrate on my last major objective of the season the U.S. Open," Mauresmo said on her Web site.

Mauresmo, now ranked No. 33, said she reached the decision "with sadness, because competing for my country in my last Olympics was very dear to my heart."

At Wimbledon, which she won in 2006, Mauresmo lost to Serena Williams in the third round.
