H-1 lanes will close at night

Resurfacing of a 1.83-mile stretch of the H-1 Freeway through Waipahu will require nighttime closure of lanes and ramps from Sunday through June.
The $4.6 million project will require the closure of lanes between Waipahu Street and Waikele Stream Bridge, including all of the on- and off-ramps at the Paiwa Interchange, as well as the east-bound Kamehameha Highway off-ramp that leads into Pearl City.
Exact closure dates and times are to be announced by the state Department of Transportation in the ensuing weeks.
Closures are expected to take place from 9 p.m. on Sundays through 4:30 a.m. on Thursdays. No work will be done Friday and Saturday nights.
Motorists are also warned that overnight ramp closures are expected from the first week of February through the first week of April. Additionally, the state's Zipper Lanes will be deployed earlier than normal on three Sunday nights — Feb. 10, Feb. 24 and March 2. The 6 p.m. deployments on those nights will make room for repaving work.
The work is being conducted by Grace Pacific Inc.
The "pavement preservation" project is expected to help extend the life span of roadway surfaces by repaving the top layer of asphalt before there is subsequent damage to the road foundation, DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.
This approach helps prevent future repaving work that could be more extensive and expensive, he said, noting that the top layer in the area between Waipahu Street and Waikele Stream is starting to peel off.
"It's like putting water sealant on your deck patio," Ishikawa said. "What you don't want is your foundation getting damaged, so you replace the top layer of asphalt to protect the road."
