Hamilton knocked out in semis of Roxy Surf Festival

The inspiring surf run by Kaua'i's Bethany Hamilton against some of the world's top professionals came to an end in the semifinals of the Roxy Surf Festival yesterday.
The final day of the contest was run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Woolamai Beach, Australia.
Hamilton was eliminated by Brazil's Bruna Schmitz, 9.5 to 2.3. Hamilton could not find any good waves in the heat, and caught just three waves.
"I just couldn't find any waves out there but I'm still stoked to have made the semis," Hamilton said. "I've needed a good result to boost my confidence and it finally happened. Now I'm just going to keep doing my best in all the events and put my heart into it."
Hamilton, 17, survived a shark attack that severed her entire left arm in 2003.
Hamilton still competes in amateur events, and this was her best showing in a professional contest. She received $2,000 for tying for third place.
Australia's Sally Fitzgibbons defeated Schmitz in the final to win the $4,500 first place check.

HILO'S EBANEZ LOSES
Hilo's Ross Ebanez lost to Eddie Alvarez of Philadelphia in the main event of the ShoXC Challenger Series last night at Atlantic City, N.J.
Alvarez controlled the first round, then won it by TKO in the second with a series of unanswered punches. The referee stopped the bout, 2:32 into the second round.
Alvarez improved to 12-1; Ebanez dropped to 16-6.
In the opening bout of the card, Wai'anae's Kala Kolohe Hose defeated Frederic Belleton of France by knockout in the first round.
Hose dropped Belleton with a right hand, ending it at 4:32 into the opening round.
Hose improved to 5-1, with all his wins via knockout. Belleton dropped to 5-2.

CU MEN WIN
Stewart Kussler hit a 3-pointer from the corner as the buzzer sounded to lift Chaminade (13-4, 8-0) to a 76-73 win over Grand Canyon (10-7, 5-5) in a men's Pacific West Conference basketball game in Phoenix, Ariz. Kussler led Chaminade with 19 points.
UH-HILO MEN WIN
John Smith scored 16 points as UH-Hilo (9-6, 5-3) beat Notre Dame de Namur (5-10, 1-6), 75-70, in a men's PacWest basketball game in Belmont, Calif.
UH-HILO WOMEN FALL
Corazon Riley scored 18 points to lead Notre Dame de Namur (5-10, 5-2 PacWest) to a 66-55 victory over UH-Hilo (5-10, 5-3) last night in a women's Pacific West Conference basketball game in Belmont, Calif.
CU WOMEN LOSE
Sara Dalgliesh scored 31 points to lead Grand Canyon (12-9, 8-2) over Chaminade (0-15, 0-8), 102-64, in a women's PacWest basketball game in Phoenix.

SPADEA ADVANCES
American Vince Spadea, the No. 2 seed, moved into the men's quarterfinals of the USTA Waikoloa Challenger on the Big Island yesterday with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Denis Gremelmayr of Germany.
In men's doubles, Brad Lum-Tucker of Kaua'i and Jan-Michael Gambill lost a second-round match to top-seeded Scott Lipsky and David Martin, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Complete results are in For the Record.
