WAHIAWA — D'Shaun Dubois scored 13 points and Mason Koa added 11 to lead visiting Kapolei to a 44-40 boys basketball win over Leilehua last night.

The Hurricanes, who jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead, improved to 6-3 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division and snapped a two-game skid. The Mules fell to 6-3 before a home crowd of about 150.

"We really needed this one," said Kapolei coach Gary Ellison. "Coming off two losses to Mililani and Campbell, we really, really needed to get back on the winning track."

For Leilehua, it was another night of frustration from the free-throw line. The Mules have shot 50 percent or lower from the line in three consecutive losses. They were 10 of 22 against Mililani last week, 5 of 11 against Radford Tuesday and 10 of 20 last night.

"Give Kapolei credit, (Ellison) did a good job preparing his team," said Leilehua coach Keith Spencer. "They hit some key shots down the stretch, we missed some free throws, missed layups. That's what it comes down to, you've got to hit your free throws, especially when you're trailing. We just couldn't do that tonight."

Kapolei headed into halftime with a 27-17 lead, but the Mules inched back to within seven points on Hoku Kama's three-pointer at the end of the third quarter to make it 36-29.

However, the Hurricanes reverted to a 3-2 zone that slowed the Leilehua offense.

"We had to control (Art Laurel) for Leilehua, because he was just a monster the last time we played them," said Ellison. "That was our main focus, control the post guys, let the guards beat us."

Laurel scored 16 points in the last matchup, a 42-36 Leilehua win on Jan. 8. Last night, he was held to 10. Kama added 10 points for the Mules.

"Kapolei was smart enough to play a zone tonight and our guards were not making the perimeter shots," said Spencer. "We just can't hit outside shots and the other teams are just sitting in a zone."

Leilehua got as close as 38-35 with 3:46 to play on a reverse layup by Laurel, but the Hurricanes scored the next six points to pull away.

Kapolei, Leilehua and Campbell are all tied for second in the Red West at 6-3. Mililani, which was idle last night, is in first-place at 6-2.
