'Iolani, Punahou girls play to 0-0 tie

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

After a week in which both the 'Iolani and Punahou girls soccer teams defeated first-place Kamehameha, they could not beat each other yesterday and ended up in a 0-0 tie.

Ironically, that enabled Kamehameha to leapfrog both teams back into first place atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings. The Warriors, who defeated Pac-Five 6-0 yesterday, improved to 9-2 (27 championship points).

'Iolani and Punahou both are 8-1-2 (26 points).

The regular season ends Wednesday, with 'Iolani playing Pac-Five (5-5), Punahou facing Mid-Pacific (1-8-1) and Kamehameha playing St. Francis (1-8-2).

The Warriors can win the league title with a victory.

If that happens and 'Iolani and Punahou both win, there will be a special playoff game for second place and the ILH's other state tournament berth that goes with it.

"In a point system, you gotta win games," Buffanblu coach Matt Martinson said.

Punahou came close to winning yesterday, especially during a five or six-minute stretch midway through the second half. In the 56th minute, Buffanblu senior Britt Sanford had a straight-on shot from about 12 yards out go off the crossbar and out of bounds.

Six minutes later, Sanford had another shot from about the same spot ricochet off the right post.

During that stretch, Punahou had two corner kick opportunities and two throw-ins by junior Aisha Price, whose range extends some 30 to 35 yards.

"Personally, it was very frustrating," Sanford said. "I just wanted one of them to go in. Both times, we got high pressure on the right side, but we were unlucky."

Raiders sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Brown said she did not get nervous even with the ball near her goal.

"I was pretty confident, and my teammates stepped up," said Brown, who finished with five saves.
