Here in Hawai'i, finding a suit that very few people have can be a bonus. So it's a ray of sunshine to find Manovich, an independent designer with fresh, original designs. The newest line to the Manovich collection is Hueology, a collection of jewel-toned and metallic bathing suits.

"I'm doing swimwear because I really like it. It was the first thing that I learned how to sew, and it was what inspired me to be a designer," says Shanelle Dragomanovich. The Honolulu Community College apparel program graduate also is a dance teacher with the 24/7 dance squad. "The dance community and being a dancer really inspires me as a designer," she said. Adding to the swimwear collection is another line called POP ˆ… a juxtaposition of random, bright-colored fabrics. "I was thinking 'urban jungle' when I designed POP," she said. Future plans for this local designer? "To eventually get my clothes into stores, and keep working on new lines."

Prices are $25 to $300. Manovich's collections can be seen at www.manovich.bigcartel.com.

    SAVE THE PLANET

    PLASTIC BEACHES

It started off as a daily routine. A few trash bags full of garbage later, Suzanne Frazer and Dean Otsuki realized that it would take more than two people to clean up this mess. The two began organizing beach cleanups with local community groups, then grew in 2006 to what is now B-E-A-C-H, Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign in Hawai'i. Since 2006, the nonprofit organization has organized group cleanups, school cleanups, and hundreds of personal cleanups, and it's seeking to expand its reach.

Last year, Frazer and Otsuki organized a cleanup at Kamilo Beach on the Big Island, where rubbish is deposited in great quantities by the currents; for them, it was the hardest cleanup in the history of B-E-A-C-H. "Seeing all that marine debris, over two feet deep in places, was just shocking; it made me feel physically sick to see that amount of rubbish," Frazer said.

Call 393-2168 or 554-2902 to register for a beach cleanup or e-mail beach_org(at)yahoo.com. For more information on the organization, visit www.b-e-a-c-h.org.

The band's seventh album, released Jan. 1, was No. 1 on last week's music charts with sales of 122,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, even though Radiohead made a digital copy of the disc available for download, with buyers naming their price, on its Web site three months ago.

Radiohead announced Wednesday that it will embark on a North American tour in two segments ˆ… one before and one after a planned European tour. Dates and venues are TBA; find out more at www.radiohead.com

    HAPPENING

    POP-PUNK FLAG-WAVERS

Motion City Soundtrack returns to Honolulu tonight for a one-off, all-ages performance at the Pipeline Cafe. The Minnesota pop-punksters have sidestepped the music mainstream, remaining proudly alternative with their first two albums, which garnered critical acclaim. But now the boys have hit the big time with their third album, "Even if it Kills Me." Released last September, the record, co-produced by Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, catapulted them to the top of the international Billboard 200 chart and right into the mainstream of things.

Tickets are $26 (general) and $50 (VIP); minors must be accompanied by an adult.
