The art and architecture of China's Longxing Monastery will be the topic of a free lecture Thursday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Puay-Peng Ho, chairman and professor in the Architecture Department at the Chinese University in Hong Kong, will present the lecture, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Doris Duke Theater.
The monastery is located just outside of Beijing and includes wooden buildings and art that represent the apex of the Song Dynasty. During the Song Dynasty, buildings were constructed exclusively from wood.
The colossal bronze 10th century sculpture of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, a wide array of clay images and a monastic history have given prominence to the monastery.
The lecture is sponsored by the Society of Asian Art of Hawaii, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the appreciation and knowledge of Asian Art in Hawaii.
