Punahou boys win state Division I basketball title

Kameron Steinhoff lifted Punahou past Kamehameha-Hawaii 41-38 to win the state boys Division I basketball championship tonight at Blaisdell Arena.

Punahou trailed 38-37 late in the game but got a tip-in to take a 39-38 lead. Kamehameha-Hawaii worked for the last shot but threw the ball away with about 24 seconds left.

With the Warriors forced to foul, Punahou's Dalton Hilliard weaved through the defense and hit an open Buffanblu player for a point-blank shot for a 41-38 lead with about 10 seconds left.

Kamehameha-Hawaii missed a 3-point attempt with seconds left and Punahou rebounded.

Steinhoff had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Robert Toma hit two late fourth-quarter baskets for Punahou.

Hogan Rosehill led Kamehameha-Hawaii with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

After Punahou seemingly took control of the game in the second period, Rosehill brought the Warriors back with two 3-pointers in the third period.

The teams stayed close throughout the fourth quarter.

Punahou completed a sweep of the Division I basketball titles as the girls beat Iolani to win the championship Friday.

In the boys Division II championship tonight at Blaisdell, Farrington defeated Aiea, 70-68, in overtime.
