Driven by the stellar play of its point guard, No. 8 Moanalua knocked off top-ranked 'Iolani, 58-55, in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Division I Boys Basketball State Championships at McKinley last night.

Stevie Austin poured in a game-high 23 points to lead Na Menehune (13-5) into tonight's 6 p.m. semifinal against No. 8 Kamehameha-Hawai'i at Blaisdell Arena. 'Iolani, the tournament's top seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, fell to 11-3 and into consolation play.

"He's the best," Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said of Austin. "He continually answered the bell when it needed to be."

Austin, a 5-foot-9 senior, hit five 3-pointers. Moanalua, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's runner-up, had nine treys for the game.

"We just couldn't stop Stevie Austin," said 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi. "He was just a really incredible force."

Na Menehune overcame the dominating post play of Raiders center Taylor Mounts (20 points) and swingman Pablo Warner (18). Warner, a 6-foot-1 junior, had 14 of 'Iolani's 20 fourth-quarter points.

"Taylor's such a load," said Tacon. "We didn't really match up well with them down low."

Na Menehune went up 14-9 after Austin hit the back end of two free throws midway through the second quarter, but the Raiders cut it to 21-20 at halftime after Berton Wong reeled off seven straight points.

Marcus Monroe's putback with five minutes left in the third quarter gave Moanalua a 32-26 lead, but 'Iolani got a fastbreak layup by Warner and Trevyn Tulonghari completed a three-point play to make it 32-31.

However, Na Menehune closed out the quarter on a 9-4 run that was capped by Austin's buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the right corner.

'Iolani inched back, tying it at 45 with 4:39 left on a pair of free throws by Warner. But Moanalua scored the next six points to take the lead for good.

"There were a couple times in the fourth quarter where (Austin) was giving the ball up to other guys and the other guys were making horrible decisions," said Tacon. "We told each other, 'You're the only one that can be making decisions for everybody in this type of situation.' "

The Raiders pulled to within three after Mounts hit a 17-foot jumper with 1:27 left to make it 56-53. Moanalua's Josh Kure missed the front end of one-and-one, but Mounts' 3-point attempt from the right corner sailed over the basket and 'Iolani was forced to foul.

Austin then made both free throws, but Warner's basket made it 58-55 with 11 seconds to play.

'Iolani regained possession after Moanalua missed both free throws, but Austin committed the team's 10th foul and the Raiders missed both free throws.

"We got off to a slow start and when we tried to catch up we just couldn't stop them," said Mugiishi, who led 'Iolani to five consecutive state titles from 2002 to 2006.

"We lost to them twice in the preseason and (last night) we were the underdogs again," said Austin. "No one thought we would have won, but we came out with the victory."

Moanalua beat Campbell in Wednesday's opening round. 'Iolani had a first-round bye.

Tacon, in his first season at Moanalua, was the head coach at Punahou for the previous five seasons.

"It's bittersweet. They're my best friends over there; my son goes there," said Tacon. "If I'm not rooting for my own team, I'm openly rooting for 'Iolani."
