Multiple charges including first-degree negligent homicide are pending against a Pahoa man stemming from a fatal Big Island crash early Saturday in Puna.
The man, 41, was the driver of a 1988 Honda two-door sedan that crashed on Route 130 at the 16-mile marker at 1:11 a.m. He was taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center and later transferred to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where his condition was stable today.
Daniel T. Ekau of Pahoa, 35, a front-seat passenger, died at 5:50 a.m. Saturday at Hilo Medical Center. Another man, 19, a rear-seat passenger, was taken to Hilo Medical with undisclosed injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors.
According to Traffic Enforcement Unit supervisor Sgt. Christopher Gali, the driver lost control of the car, which crossed the centerline and struck an embankment. The survivors were ejected from the vehicle and Ekau appears to be the only one wearing a seatbelt, Gali said.
The driver was arrested for investigation of first-degree negligent homicide and negligent injury, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, and promoting intoxicating liquor to a person under the age of 21.
