4 teens hurt, 1 critical, in Maui pickup truck crash

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old Ha'iku man suffered critical life-threatening injuries early today on Maui in a pickup truck crash on Honoapi'ilani Highway in Kapalua.

The man, a passenger in the pickup truck, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The 19-year-old male driver and two other passengers — a girl, 16, and man, 18 — were also transported to Maui Memorial hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

The crash occurred at 3:31 a.m. on Honoap'ilani Highway, 715 feet northeast of Plantation Club Drive.

According to vehicle homicide unit investigators, the group was headed toward Kapalua when the driver lost control of the 1996 Dodge pickup.

The truck veered off the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned onto its roof. The vehicle continued sliding and ended up in the opposite lane of traffic on the highway.
