The battle for fifth place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Boys Basketball Red Conference came down to pressure.

Kahuku applied it last night and Kapolei couldn't handle it.

The host Red Raiders used a full-court press to force 24 turnovers and ended the game on a 39-4 run in a 73-32 victory over Kapolei.

"It's something we've worked on all season, but not used," Kahuku coach Nathan James said of the press. "We kind of got away from it at the end. It is something that isn't prepared for by other teams."

Kahuku clinched the OIA's final berth in this week's Hawaiian Airlines State Division I State Championships. Mililani, Moanalua, Kalaheo and Campbell also will represent the league.

Jray Galeai sank three 3-pointers and scored 15 points, and Willie Ching had 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks despite playing only four minutes in the second half.

The victory was especially pleasing to Galeai, whose Red Raiders football team lost to Kapolei in the OIA playoffs.

"We lost to Kapolei in football and we kind of wanted to get payback," Galeai said.

Kahuku, which led by 15 in the first half, let Kapolei get within 34-28 with 4:11 left in the third after three consecutive field goals by D'Shawn Dubois.

From there, the Red Raiders' 1-2-1-1 full-court press smothered the Hurricanes.

"They came out and they're a tough team," said Kapolei coach Gary Ellison. "We couldn't handle their full-court pressure. We've struggled with that a lot this year."

In the second half, the Red Raiders made 17 of 25 field-goal attempts with many coming on layups.

Field goals by Po'okela McKeague and Nathaniel Dixon were the only points Kapolei could muster over the final 12 minutes.

Kahuku (East) and Kapolei (West) were both division runners-up and had first-round byes in the 12-team tournament. Both lost in the quarterfinals and had to win games Monday to get to yesterday's fifth-place game.

"Our boys are really disappointed," Ellison said. "They expected to make it to states this year. We worked hard all year and surprised a lot of people this year. We weren't a pushover like we were last year."

Kahuku (11-4) went on a 17-2 run to take a 19-7 lead with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Galeai scored seven points during the rally.

The Red Raiders' largest lead of the first half was 26-11 after a putback by Shiloah Teo with 5:08 left in the second period.

Kapolei (10-5) responded by making its next four field-goal attempts — two by Lawrence Olive, one by Dubois and a 3-pointer by Keanu Montez — to get within five with 2:28 left before halftime.

Ching, a 6-foot-5 center, had 10 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three steals in the first half.

"Willie has provided us with, down the stretch here, with exactly what we've needed," James said.

Ching picked up his third foul with 6:04 left in the third and re-entered at the start of the fourth. He played two minutes and headed to the bench with the score out of reach.

Kalaheo's Richard Preza-Haynes added 15 points and Cheynne Lishman 13. Makinano sank three 3's, and Eddie Gaines had 11 points for Campbell.
