Right-hander Jared Alexander pitched eight shutout innings in his University of Hawai'i debut in the Rainbows' 9-2 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a non-conference baseball game today at Les Murakami Stadium.

Jonathan Hee and Vinnie Catricala hit home runs and Derek DuPree, Kevin Macdonald, Sean Montplaisir and Matt Roquemore each had run-scoring hits for the Rainbows.

The Rainbows improved to 2-0. The Vulcans dropped to 0-2.

Alexander, a transfer Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, Calif., allowed five hits, striking out three and walking two. Sam Spangler pitched the ninth.

Hee opened the bottom of the first with a walk and stole second. DuPree doubled down the left-field line, scoring Hee. After Brandon Haislet popped out to first base, Macdonald singled through the right side to score DuPree and give UH a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, Catricala opened the seventh with a homer to left field.

The Rainbows put it away with a six-run eighth inning.

Greg Garcia was hit by a Emil DeAndreis pitch and scored on Hee's home run to left field to make it 5-0. John Holley replaced DeAndreis and gave up a double to Jeffrey Van Doornum. Haislet was hit by a pitch, but was forced at second on a Macdonald grounder as Van Doornum moved to third. Catricala was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Montplaisir singled to right, driving in Van Doornum and Macdonald and Catricala took third. Casey Koizumi replaced Holley and allowed Montplaisir to take second on a wild pitch. After Landon Hernandez struck out, Roquemore doubled down the left-field line to drive in Catricala and Montplaisir to make it 9-0. Garcia popped out to end the inning.

The Vulcans got their runs off Spangler in the ninth on an RBI double by Dayne Ogawa and a RBI fielder's choice by Colins Obed.
