The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational surf meet in memory of Hawai'i surfing legend Eddie Aikau was called off today after the anticipated monster waves failed to materialize overnight along the North Shore.
Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, which includes the Ocean Safety Division, said large waves are rolling up along Oahu's North Shore.
"But they're not as large as was anticipated," Cheplic said. "They're still big, and dangerous, but just not big enough for the Eddie Aikau."
He said there had been no reports of surf-related damage or road closures as of 7:45 a.m. today.
