The Hoakalei Cultural Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of three board members: president, Arline Eaton; vice president, Mary Serrao; and treasurer, Alicia Maluafiti.
Eaton is a Hawaiian-studies teacher for Iroquois Point Elementary School, where she has worked since 1986.
Serrao worked for the federal government and co-founded the Pu'uloa Outrigger Canoe Club.
Maluafiti is the owner of Lo'ihi Communications, a community and government relations consulting business.
State Sen. Rosalyn Baker recently received the Exemplary State Elected Official Comprehensive Cancer Control Award at the 2007 Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition meeting. Baker's work in cancer control includes successfully championing an increase in the state's cigarette tax in 2006 and steering legislation that resulted in Hawai'i becoming a smoke-free state. Baker, a 31-year cancer survivor and healthcare advocate, has served as vice chairwoman of the Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition for the past two years and is now chairwoman.
Peter Leong, of the University of Hawai'i College of Education Technology & Distance Programs, was one of 40 high-technology leaders honored at the 7th Annual Flavors of Technology. Leong is featured in Pacific News Bytes as one of Hawai'i's top high-tech leaders.
