'EWA BEACH — The Campbell High School boys basketball team has made it to the state tournament, again.

Now, the hope is that people will remember the Sabers are a perennial contender.

Terrance Tafai scored 20 points and Michael Makinano and Eddie Gaines added 11 each to lead Campbell past Kailua, 56-47, in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division Tournament last night.

After a tight first half, the Sabers (10-3), top seed out of the West, turned on the defensive pressure in the third quarter to pull away from the Surfriders (5-9), the East's fourth seed.

All quarterfinal winners last night — Kalaheo, Moanalua, Mililani — received state tournament berths. It's Campbell's fourth straight berth.

"We're trying to get Campbell basketball to be mentioned in the same breath as the Kalaheos, the Moanaluas and the Mililanis," Campbell coach Glenn Flores said. "Hopefully four years in a row, we hope to get some type of recognition."

Campbell, which is receiving votes in the Advertiser's statewide poll of media and coaches, scored nine straight in the third quarter to take a 41-30 lead.

Kailua closed the deficit to 51-45 with 1:37 left in the fourth on Billy Oden's 3-point play. But Campbell made one final push as Patrick Ward made a free throw on the next possession and Makinano stole the ball and converted the layup to make it 54-45.

"When we play as a team, nobody can stop us," said Tafai, who dominated in the low post. "One team, one mission. That's our motto."

Kailua coach Tim Harrison praised Tafai's play.

"He had a great game," Harrison said. "I don't think he usually does that. But our defense wasn't coming."

Campbell, which has won 10 out of its last 11 since the preseason, will meet Mililani in Wednesday's semifinals while Kalaheo plays Moanalua.

Scott Burns scored 19 points and Jon Keen added 15 to rally Mililani (10-3) to a victory over Kahuku (9-3) at the Trojans' gym.

"The team played hard, they earned it," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said. "The way we played defense in the fourth quarter, they knew what was at stake."

Willie Ching led Kahuku with 27 points.

The Trojans trailed 51-46 with under six minutes to play, but used a 12-0 run to take control.
