Nanakuli High and Intermediate School culinary students kicked it up more than a notch recently at the District Culinary Competition held at Kapolei High School. They took first, fourth and seventh place.

Each team produced Chinese tossed green salad with vinaigrette dressing, chicken roulade with duxelle and spinach with Italian herb reduction accompanied by creamy carrot mashed potatoes and strawberries romanoff.

Peter Kaneshige of 'Aiea was recently awarded an Agency Hands in the Community Award for his commitment to volunteering in the local community. With this award comes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation to Hawaii Mothers' Milk, the nonprofit organization at which he volunteers.

"Mauna Loa," an anthurium developed by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, has won a Red Ribbon in the Society of American Florists 2008 Outstanding Varieties Competition. The anthurium was entered into the "Other Cut Flowers" category by Hilo-based Green Point Nurseries, one of the state's largest cut flower producers. Year-round production of glossy spathes and outstanding vase life are the major attributes of "Mauna Loa."

The anthurium was developed by the team of Heidi Kuehnle, Haruyuki Kamemoto, Tessie Amore, John Kunisaki, Joanne Lichty and Janice Uchida. Kamemoto is credited with establishing UH's anthurium research program in 1950 to develop disease-resistant and novel anthuriums for the flower industry.

The Domestic Violence Action Center of Honolulu has announced new members to its board of directors. They are: Kathryn Acorda of Kiewit Building Group, Francie Boland of Hawaii Medical Service Association, Kari Leong of Greater Good, Nora Nomura of Hawaii Government Employees Association and Wilhelmina Young of Kalaeloa Partners.

Whitlow W.L. Au, chief scientist in the Marine Mammal Research Program at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology, UH-Manoa, has been elected president-elect of the Acoustical Society of America, headquartered in Melville, N.Y. He began his one-year term in July, after which he will succeed the current president.

Au studies the biosonar systems of dolphins, specifically how dolphins, whales and other marine mammals use sonar to communicate.

The Acoustical Society of America is the premier international scientific society devoted to the science and technology of sound.
