There was no question Lalo Respicio deserved to be an all-star, but his final performance for Campbell High two weeks ago was not indicative of that.

The senior quarterback had his worst game of the season in a state Division II semifinal loss to 'Iolani on Nov. 28. Respicio threw six interceptions in the game.

Last night, Respicio made the most of another chance, throwing a touchdown pass in the second quarter to help the West All-Stars to a 21-14 win over the East All-Stars in the Hawai'i Union Builders Goodwill Senior Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

The annual all-star game featured 100 high school seniors from the O'ahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

"It's been an honor working with all these guys," Respicio said. "Coming out, working with the coaches, getting information from everybody — just coming back from a bad loss to 'Iolani ... I'm pretty proud that I had the chance to come back and showcase my talent."

Respicio, whose six picks against the eventual-state champion Raiders matched his season total, finished 8-of-11 passing for 63 yards and no interceptions.

"He's a fighter," said West head coach Fred Salanoa of Respicio. "Playing that quarterback position is the hardest (position) on a football team and you're going to have some games when you don't play as well or it's just not your game, it's not your night. Obviously he had a bad game against 'Iolani, but we have those as quarterbacks, having played that position as well. Quarterbacks usually bounce back and he's one guy that can bounce back from it."

Salanoa, who played quarterback at Eastern Washington, was on the opposing sideline of Respicio and the Sabers twice this season as head coach of Radford.

Campbell beat Radford in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference title game.

"I picked him because I have faith in him, I've seen him do it week in and week out during our season and (last night) he just showed what he could do and that's play real football," Salanoa said.

Mililani coach Darnell Arceneaux worked with the West quarterbacks this week.

"You know, sometimes all-stars they think they know everything, but it was the total opposite with him," said Arceneaux. "Lalo did a great job tonight, doing the little things. He asked a lot of questions throughout the week and tried to soak up all the knowledge he could."

The East got on the board first with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Roosevelt's Shon Fujii to 'Iolani's Keenan Ho'ohuli on its first possession. Moanalua's Justin Watanabe kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 midway through the opening quarter.

The ensuing drive for the West stalled and it was forced to punt. However, Fujii was intercepted on first-and-goal and the West regained possession.

Mililani's Sterling Cossey hit Fujii as he released the pass and Damien's Anthony Tuitele picked it off and returned it to the West's 30-yard line.

Respicio completed four straight passes on the drive, capped by his 8-yard scoring pass to Campbell teammate Arthur Aiwohi with 8:33 until halftime. Mason Puckett, of 'Aiea, tied it with the PAT.

The East retook the lead on its following possession, a six-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by a 45-yard touchdown pass from Farrington's Dayton Kealoha to fellow Governor Drake Miller to give the East a 14-7 halftime lead.

Mililani's Iosua Manuma tied it at 14 late in the third quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass to fellow Trojan Kahi Perbera.

Following an East three-and-out, the West was forced to punt, but it was muffed by the East and the West's Anthony Tokunaga of Kamehameha recovered at the 5-yard line.

Wai'anae's Jonathan Ligsay punched it in one play later that proved to be the difference.
