Television station KGMB9 will run a daylong test on Monday to allow TV watchers in Hawai'i to determine if their TVs will work properly after all TV stations across the nation begin broadcasting a digital signal on Jan. 15.
On Monday, Hawai'i residents using an antenna can turn their television to KGMB9 anytime between 4:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. to see if they'll be affected by the digital switch. If viewers see a see a moving crawl on their screen, their signal may be lost on Jan. 15, 2009.
The moving crawl will tell viewers to take action now and will explain what to do to prevent their television from becoming obsolete on Jan. 15.
The crawl message will read: "You are seeing this message because on January 15th, 2009, the television set you're now watching might lose its signal when Hawaii switches to digital broadcasting. You need to take action now to convert to digital reception. Call 888-DTV-2009 or go to www.kgmb9.com for information."
The DTV Transition link on KGMB9.com explains details about the DTV Transition and lists the steps to take to ensure that viewers' TV sets will work. Viewers can also call the toll free number: 888-DTV-2009.
Hawai'i will be the first state to make the federally mandated digital switch. KGMB9 management expects approximately 25,000 Hawai'i residents will be affected and believes testing before the switch is imperative, station officials said. The station plans to do several more tests before Jan. 15.
