The Punahou School Marching Band and JROTC Marching Unit have been selected to participate in the Jan. 20 inauguration parade down Pennsylvania Avenue following President-elect Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol.

The selection of the school's band and cadets for the historic event was announced yesterday by the Presidential Inaugural Committee. It was not immediately known whether any other Hawai'i units were accepted for the parade.

Obama's inauguration holds special significance for Punahou, since the president-elect attended the private school from 1971 to 1979.

"For the band and cadets, it's an honor to represent Hawai'i and Punahou School in this parade, allowing us to be part of history," said Academy Music Department head Darin Au. "Our participation is also meaningful because President-elect Obama is such an inspiration for our students. He's a powerful reminder that they can achieve whatever they dream."

The school's JROTC program is the oldest in the state and has earned Honor Unit or Honor Unit with Distinction status for 56 years. The 22 Punahou cadets, six cheerleaders and two advisers comprise the contingent that will participate in the parade.

The marching band includes 145 students plus chaperones.

A total of 1,382 organizations applied to participate in the parade, the highest number ever, according to the inauguration committee.

The committee was assisted in its selection process by a group of experienced military musicians who assessed the presentation skills of marching bands, musical acts and drill teams.
