Thousands turn out for start of Honolulu's holiday lights celebration

People crowded in front of Hololulu Hale for the start of Honolulu City Lights this evening in downtown Honolulu.

The Honolulu City Lights celebration officially kicked off tonight with a tree-lighting ceremony and parade.

Thousands of residents turned out for the festivities.

The parade featured an estimated 2,000 marchers, 40 vehicles, 15 floats and 15 bands.

Thousands more people are expected to come see City Lights by the time it closes on Jan. 1, 2009.

The decorated route is from City Hall area on King Street to Alapa'i Street, Beretania Street, Bishop Street, back on King.

The celebration also features a Christmas tree exhibit and wreath display inside Honolulu Hale, plus gingerbread houses, viewable from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily including holidays and weekends.
