MILILANI — Jeremy Higgins passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for two scores to lead visiting Saint Louis to a dominating 48-20 win over Mililani in a non-league game at John Kauinana Stadium last night.

John Hao, a longtime Saint Louis assistant, won in his head coaching debut with the Crusaders. Mililani fell to 0-2.

"It feels real good, but I'm actually more happy for the kids than anything," said Hao, a former all-state quarterback for the Crusaders. "I think this is a new era, a new team. I'm expecting a lot from them and they played well tonight."

Mililani took an early 7-0 lead after Sterling Cossey picked off a Higgins pass and returned it 56 yards to the Saint Louis 4. Three plays later, Taz Stevenson spun into the end zone on a 1-yard dive.

Saint Louis answered on its next drive with a 6-yard touchdown run by Austin Wahinekona, one of his two scores in the game.

Mililani used a seven-play drive, capped by a 32-yard touchdown pass from Matt Milton to Fred Culp on fourth-and 11, to reclaim the lead, 14-7, with 6:23 left in the first quarter.

Higgins engineered another scoring drive, punching it in on a 10-yard keeper with 2:55 left in the first quarter to tie the score at 14. The touchdown capped a 13-play drive that covered 79 yards.

Saint Louis then scored five unanswered touchdowns before Mililani scored on a late 1-yard run by Trevor Lee.

"We just didn't come out and match their energy in the second half," Mililani coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "Saint Louis is a deep team. We didn't tackle well today, we didn't catch the ball very well. We just have to execute a lot better."

Higgins connected on touchdown passes of 24 and 36 yards with slotback Lucas Gonsalves, who finished with a game-high seven catches for 131 yards.

"I've got to thank my O-line and my playmakers. They got the job done," Higgins said. "(Gonsalves) always wants the ball and he always can get open. I've just got to put it out there for him. He's a good player and he makes big plays."

Higgins scored on a 3-yard keeper around left end with under two minutes to play in the third quarter to make it 41-14.

"This kid did every little assignment we asked of him," Hao said. "Passing the ball, running the ball, he's done actually more than we've asked him to do. He played beautifully."

Higgins, who is trying to replace two-time Advertiser Offensive Player of the Year Micah Mamiya, finished 20 of 27 passing.

The Crusaders' defense held Mililani to 219 yards of total offense, with standout receiver Stevenson being limited to one catch for a loss of two yards.
